Sangeun Lee, Principal English National Ballet

Originally from Seoul, Sangeun Lee received her full dance training at Sunhwa Arts School.

There, she developed a distinctive artistic voice and refined her technical excellence, earning recognition in multiple competitions. In 2005, she signed her first professional contract with Universal Ballet, joining the company as a soloist.

Her journey then led her to the Semperoper Ballett in Dresden in 2010. She quickly emerged there as one of the company’s leading dancers and was promoted to Principal in 2015.

Eight years later, in 2023, Sangeun embarked on a new chapter by joining English National Ballet as a Principal dancer. With an extensive classical and neo-classical repertoire, she has collaborated throughout her career with internationally acclaimed choreographers such as David Dawson, William Forsythe, Malou Airaudo, Alexander Ekman and Derek Deane.

She appears in the documentary film “Dancing Pina”, which follows her in-depth work on the role of Iphigenia in Pina Bausch’s “Iphigenie auf Tauris”, a role that has since become one of her personal highlights.

Sangeun has also inspired several original creations, including the role of Doña Dulcinea in Aaron S. Watkin’s “Don Quixote”, new works in David Dawson’s “The Four Seasons” and “Four Last Songs”, Alexander Ekman’s “COW”, and Hofesh Shechter’s “Corpse de Ballet”.
